Twitterdom vs. Wisdom?

“Knowledge comes, but wisdom lingers”
Alfred Lord Tennyson

Twitterdom vs. Wisdom?

48Days.com

While attending a funeral recently, I glanced up and down just my row to see several people Twittering and checking emails in the last few minutes prior to the beginning of the service. It’s now common during sermons and seminars to see people with their heads down, busy passing on tidbits of information instantly. This morning I read that one million people are following Ashton Kutcher on Twitter.

I suggest that this massive addiction to information leads us away from wisdom, not toward it, creating what author Shane Hill calls “a permanent puberty of the mind.” Recognize that information, knowledge and even intelligence do not necessarily lead to wisdom. The overload of information in fact encourages the opposite of what creates wisdom – stillness, time, reflection and solitude.

With the internet, TV, email, FaceBook, Twitter and cell phones, there is no waiting. There is no such thing as stillness or quiet personal reflection. Meaningful experiences and the path toward wisdom can be diverted by constant information.

I am not anti-technology. I love having instant access to useful information. But this is much like having a bowl of peanut M&Ms in front of me. I tend to eat them just because they are there. At some point I will have to remove myself from the bowl or my initial pleasure will turn to misery and sickness.

And I believe allowing a constant diet of unlimited information and data into our brain will also ultimately turn from being a useful treat to something that will cause our mental lives to become bloated and deprive us of the characteristics we desire most.

We have to decide when to push back from the table of information overload – where it leads to our emotional, social, philosophical, and psychological sickness rather than being a useful addition in our quest for wisdom. I have made strategic decisions to not be on Facebook or use Twitter. Not because they are bad but because I have to chose which tools that I can use effectively.

Increasing the rate of information input to your brain may make you a candidate for Jeopardy but it probably has little to do with increasing spiritual characteristics like love, trust, compassion, faith, courage -- and wisdom.

Want to increase your wisdom?

Practice reflection, meditation and introspective thinking for 30 minutes each morning. Many who allow constant input are keeping themselves in the shallow end of the wisdom pool. Don’t be one of them.

- Turn off the TV for at least two hours every evening

- Read your email at set times during the day – perhaps once in the morning and once in the evening. Don’t allow yourself to be interrupted with every new incoming message

- Spend four hours on Saturday without your cell phone or computer

- Plan one day a quarter on an “information fast.” Get away from your computer, your cell phone, TV and the newspapers. You’ll be amazed at how your creativity will increase – you may get the one idea that will change your future

- Read one good non-fiction book each month. Choose carefully from the wisdom of the ages.

Incidentally, according to a new Nielson report, 60% of Twitter users sign up and drop out after one month. And I seriously doubt that following Ashton Kutcher is going to increase your wisdom.

Are you ready to face eternity? If you have not accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour of your life and desire to make that commitment now please repeat the following prayer:

Lord Jesus be merciful to me a sinner. I realize that I have sinned against you and come short of your glory. I confess that Jesus Christ is Lord and I believe in my heart that God has raised him from the dead. I pray for your forgiveness and ask that you save me now and accept me into your kingdom. Give me eternal life today.

Issue # 24 - Just ‘N time

What does good, bad, truth, & lie have in common? Well all of these can be related to the matter I will tell you about shortly. I know you have been on all sides of this word and can relate your own stories on this. Many times you were in direct relation to it, at other times you held your distance.

I would also have you to know that being involved with this sometimes left you happy, sad, and sometimes it made you cry. Why? From the outcome of this. At other times it left you concerned, worried, frightened, anxious and even depressed.

It’s so good for us to have now arrived at the letter 'N'. In the letter 'N' we have the words name, natural, necessary, nice, nomination, nourishment etc. Oh but we won’t be looking at any of these. Surprisingly each of these can also have a story about our keyword for today. Without further delay , I’m talking about the word 'news'. Even as you read this you just recently heard some type of news.

Whether you’ve heard it from a friend, relative in the community, nationally or internationally, it was birthed from somewhere. The main thing you are most concerned about is the fact that is it true?

News:
1. a. Information about recent events or happenings, especially as reported by
newspapers, periodicals, radio, or television.
b. A presentation of such information, as in a newspaper or on a newscast.
2. New information of any kind: The requirement was news to him.

"For most folks, no news is good news; for the press, good news is not news".
Gloria Borger

Actual Newspaper Headlines
Crack Found on Governor's Daughter [Imagine that!]
Something Went Wrong in Jet Crash, Expert Says [No, really?]
Miners Refuse to Work after Death [No-good-for-nothing' lazy so-and-so!]
If Strike Isn't Settled Quickly, It May Last Awhile [You think?]
Cold Wave Linked to Temperatures [Who would have thought!]

Typhoon Rips Through Cemetery; Hundreds Dead

Many people rely on mainstream news for news. It is filled with propaganda. Here's an example of what happens when people believe what MSM says. Turn off the TV when you want real news, turn to journalists on the internet brave enough to tell the truth.

The kind of news you hear can affect things like your day, decisions, investments, and relationships. Sadly to say, many may have been bad judgments because as time went on you found out it was only a rumor.

I know you have experienced that bad news travels faster than wild fire. He doesn’t care who carries him he just wants to get around. Innocent people are even caught up in this process . It’s sure hard to put out once it’s out there. Why? Cause you don’t know how far it’s gone.

Often time there is a search for the latest news whether it be about products and inventions, fashion trends, job markets, weather, price of fuel and so forth. How about the news that has been around for centuries? That God loves you and Jesus came, died for your sins, was buried and resurrected that you may have eternal life. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life". John 3:16(KJV)

This is probably the one millionth time you have heard this. There is nothing better than a drink of water when you are thirsty, even though you have drank water before. Even just as important, do you know that even though you have heard news many times over, there is always someone out there that hasn’t heard hears as yet?

What am I saying? Not because you are filled doesn’t mean you can’t offer someone else a drink. "As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country". Proverbs 25:25 (KJV)

Heaven’s broadcasting station is on 24/7, but God is in need of some more reporters to bear the good news to the world. Make sure you are a part of the team that’s spreading the good news. "How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, "Your God reigns!" Isaiah 52:7 (NIV)

More movies produced in Bollywood than Hollywood.

Each year, more movies are produced in India, where the moving image industry is referred to as Bollywood, than in Hollywood. About 1000 movies are released annually in India, about twice the output of Hollywood. The "B" in Bollywood refers to Bombai (renamed Mumbai).
