Be Careful Cause You Never Know

Imagine that I told you that whatever you needed that you can have it right now? What if I also added that you can be whatever you wanted to be and I will make sure it happens. How far will you stretch your imagination?Now what if I reverse all that and told you no, would your feelings toward me change knowing that I could have done it?

Now, let me ask you when was the last time you carried out an act of kindness for someone else? Regardless of how great and important you believe that your need is there is always someone that is in a worse condition than you.

Even though it may feel as though the little you may give may not be much, just ask the individual being helped . For some it made them smile, eased the pain, lifted a burden, satisfied their hunger, gave them new hope or even helped them find their purpose in life. You never know how much impact you will make in someone’s life, but do whatever is in your power to do. Let me share this excerpt I read a few weeks ago based on a true life’s story:

“There was this young man that went to our church when I was a kid. He wrote plays. They were sort of unorthodox in their approach. They dealt with some crazy issues and had a little profanity in them. This guy would often ask my father for help and my dad chose to support him, probably not even totally understanding him.

I believe it was because my dad was spiritual and didn’t just look at the exterior presentation. Well, this young man turned out to be Tyler Perry. If my father hadn’t supported him in those early years of creativity, maybe he wouldn’t have had confidence to take his gift further. Not only that, maybe he would have even rejected my father, now that he has gotten to the point of success and fame that he has now.

Ironically, the tables turned after Hurricane Katrina. My father then needed his help, and Tyler was the one that was there to help us rebuild after that tragedy. You just never know!” (Taken from the book “Why Can’t I Sing About Love” by PJ Morton)

Because of those acts of kindness and granted opportunity of BPM we know who Tyler Perry is today. Even though worth millions today, I’m sure Tyler Perry cannot begin to put a monetary value on the opportunity granted to him because of someone who reached out to give him a chance.

I’m sure you would agree that we hear an enormous amount of no’s in life. If this is the case then imagine the thrill that ignites in the heart of someone you say “Yes I will help you” to.

I know you have to go right now but before you go, be very careful how you handle the people that needs your help cause you never know.

“So then, whatever you desire that others would do to and for you, even so do also to and for them, for this is (sums up) the Law and the Prophets“. Matthew 7:12 (Amplified Bible)

Why Potential Doesn't Equal Success

Do you often find yourself thinking about all the potential you have in life? How many disappointments have you experienced inyour life even though had great potential? You may have an advantage with your potential but is your success guaranteed?

I had a friend who hated to hear the dreaded, "P-word." To him, "potential" meant one thing: You're messing your life up, why won’t you get it in line?

He would say to me, "I’m tired of people saying I have potential and that I can do better. It would be so much easier if I didn't have any potential. There would be no pressure."

My friend, who later exceeded expectations by becoming a dynamic pastor of a large suburban church, hit the nail on the head.

With potential comes enormous pressure. Ask Solomon. Talk about potential; he was swimming in the stuff. His father, David, set up the nation of Israel in such a way that Solomon couldn't possibly fail. Then, the Lord made Solomon the wisest and richest man who ever lived.

Who could fail with that kind of a start?

Well, sadly, Solomon did fail. Sure, he built Israel into a superpower, he grew his wealth, he expanded the kingdom.

But as a spiritual and moral leader, he was an abysmal failure. As a result of his serial adultery, God eventually divided Israel into two kingdoms.

The question people ask is this. "How could someone like Solomon, who was given so much, fail?"

The answer? Potential doesn't equal success.

This is a pattern that's repeated today in Christian homes and schools across the country. Research indicates that somewhere around 80 percent of evangelical teens walk away from the faith when they get to college.

How can teens—who have been given so much from their Christian parents, good churches, and godly examples—chuck it all in favor of the temporary pleasures of sin?

The answer? Potential doesn't equal success.

What plagued Solomon—and what plagues Christian young people—is a failure to internalize faith, to make it their own. Instead, they are content to rest on the fervency of their parents or their pastor or their church. But this kind of hand-me-down experience won't survive the rigors of college, the workforce, and marriage.

The key to success in the Christian life is not what you've been given, but what you do with the opportunities God offers you. Solomon had a lot going for him and failed.

Contrast that with Joseph, who grew up in a dysfunctional family, was betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery, and was falsely accused of rape.

Joseph had very little potential, and yet he succeeded.

Our all-powerful God has blessed each one of us differently. We all possess different gifts, talents, and passions. We all have different backgrounds, family situations, and heritages. These are things you cannot control. These are advantages or disadvantages you did not choose.

What you can control is how you choose to live your life. Will you squander what God has given you, or will you use it for His glory? Will you lament your station in life or will you make the most of every situation?

You can have potential without any success. You can have success without any potential. You can also have potential and success.

Issue # 50 - Grabbing Hold of Hidden Opportunities

There is someone that knocks at your door every so often, the sad thing about it is that you do not recognize who he is and what he has come to do. He comes in an attempt to make your life better but you don’t understand how. I hope the story below gives you a helping hand today:

The first Avon lady was a man. David H. McConnell was a big city bookseller. In 1892, when the perfume he used to reward loyal customers proved more popular than his paperbacks, he dumped the books and began promoting only the perfumes. McConnell’s next smart move was assembling a workforce composed entirely of housewives.

In contrast to the then prevalent door-to-door salesmen, Avon ladies made friends with their customers and were not the creepy blue-suede-shoe guys that most people expected to see knocking at their doors. By recognizing his true market and how to best relate to his customers, McConnell made a fortune, and so did many of his Avon ladies.

How many businesses do you know of today that continue to do what they’ve always done, even in the face of a changing market? If you sell appliances and a WalMart opens next door, you may find a shrinking opportunity to sell appliances but an exploding market to repair and service them.

If every yard you mow has a tree stump that needs to be removed, you may discover that rather than just being one more yard service, you have a unique opportunity in stump removal.

A couple of years ago, I worked with a gentleman who had been selling fabric to major apparel manufacturers. He observed that any flaw in the fabric rolls caused it to be sold for scrap. He quit his “normal” job, began buying and cutting the scrap fabric into squares to be used as rags. Body shops, auto dealers, and parts stores demanded his product faster than he could produce it. He got a contract with Dollar General to provide the rags packed in plastic bags. He now employs seven neighborhood women to help him stay ahead of this unique opportunity that was right under his nose.

Our changing work environment is shrinking many of the old business and work opportunities. Even Avon is finding resistance to the knocking on doors model as more and more people purchase on the Internet. But with every change there is the equal seed of new opportunity. The maker of Levi’s was an unsuccessful gold miner who recognized that the other miners needed more durable pants for their digging activities.
