Issue # 20 - How much ‘J’ is in your cup?

From A - Z… the series continues, letter 'J'

A few years ago a women was standing on top of a fifty-four story building in New York City, ready to jump to her death. The police suicide squad took her threats very serious. She didn’t look like the type though, in her expensive dress and distinguished appearance. Many attempts to get her down failed.

One of the officers called his pastor to come to the scene to pray for the woman. After observing the situation, the pastor asked for permission to try get close enough to talk to the woman. That he was granted.

The pastor started walking toward the woman, but she screamed as before, "Don’t come any closer or I’ll jump!" He stepped back and called out to her, "I’m sorry that you believe no one loves you". This got her attention and also the attention of the suicide squad- it was such an unusual thing to say. "Your children and grandchildren must not love you. Apparently they never give you any attention." he continued.

With this the woman took a step toward the pastor and said, "My grandchildren do love me. My whole family does. My grandchildren are wonderful. I have eight of them". The pastor took a step toward the woman and said, "Well then you must be very poor, or you wouldn’t want to take your life".

The woman, who was obviously overweight, said, "Do I look like I go without meals? We live in a nice apartment in Central Park. I’m not poor!" the pastor then took another step and was now only three feet from her. "Then why do you want to kill yourself? I don’t understand".

The woman thought for a moment and said, "You know, I don’t really remember".

This true story ended with the pastor escorting the woman off the edge while she showed him pictures of her grandchildren.

Isn’t it good to see people laughing, enjoying themselves, having a good time and excited about living. How can we get more people in this state is the question I ask you today? Anyone who is against this type of move has to be a mad man. Bearing that in mind, it puts them as the number one candidate for what I want to talk about today.

Where is your 'joy' level? I want you to know that this is necessary for your journey in life. You need to have an experience with this everyday of your life. Life is to be taken very serious but it doesn’t mean you can’t have fun while living.

Joy :
- great happiness, pleasure, to enjoy
- Intense and especially ecstatic or exultant happiness
- A condition of supreme well-being and good spirits

"Joy is not in things; it is in us"
Richard Wagner

Have you ever had this experience? You are not really in a good mood or having a bad day. You see a certain person and automatically your spirit is lifted and your filled with joy. Mind you, this person can be anyone from a relative, friend, neighbour, co- worker etc. What I’m getting at is the new life and energy you receive out of this minor incident. People enjoy these type of persons along their path.

When persons see or hear them, their heart is full, their smile is bigger and they want to live longer. Don’t you know that’s the kind of influence you can have when you add joy to someone else’s life. I’m encouraging you to be that type of person.

If joy helps increase people’s energy then the lack of it wears them down. Being in a sad state will speed up you aging process and it will definitely begin to show. Various conditions and news try to get you in a depressed mood and rob you out of your joy.

I must remind you that the joy of the Lord is your strength. On the other hand the strength of the Lord is your joy. When joy is present it runs sadness and its entire family away. So why don’t we make a more conscious effort to help someone else put a smile on their face, and encourage the others to keep smiling. I am very confident that if you do it for someone else it will happen for you. A little bit of help means a lot to someone who is hurting. Thankful people are happy people.

Issue # 19 - Warning - Don’t let them steal your ‘I’

From A - Z… the series continues, letter 'I'

I was raised by an Egyptian princess after she found me hidden in some bulrushes. When I was grown, I led the Israelites into the wilderness and away from Pharaoh.

Who am I?
a) Moses b) Ramses c) Absalom d) Saul

Why are they trying to steal this away from you? What am I talking about? That same thing that you don’t consider important. I must warn you though you must make every effort to guard this.

If you have criminals plotting to get a hold of this, then it has to be worth much. No one is going to waste time going after something that is not valuable or beneficial. They watch what you do, where you go and try to find out as much as they can about you. Warning - don’t let them steal your 'I' . Do you see what 'I' see? Do you see what they see? I’m talking about your 'identity'.

Identity :
- name, individuality, distinctness of character, personal uniqueness.
- The set of behavioral or personal characteristics by which an individual is recognizable:

“You have your identity when you find out, not what you can keep your mind on, but what you can't keep your mind off”
Archie R. Ammons

Where is your ID ?

The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans are victims of ID theft each year. Identity theft strikes 1 in 8 adults. Identity theft is a significant problem that is on the rise. It is affecting millions of consumers and costing billions of dollars.

Do you really know who you are? How close or far are you from who you were created to be. I must confess though, it can take a lifetime to fully discover who you are. When you don’t know who you are then it’s hard to carry out your purpose. That is why most people live unfulfilled lives.

Have you found yourself at times wanting to be someone else? What is it that caused you to think that way? Is it their personality? Their fame & popularity? Their riches? Now don’t you believe that God can make your life as attractive as theirs?

If you don’t come into your identity then I hope you realize that you rob the rest of us that are in the world. How? By withholding the things that God has deposited in you for us. I told you that you were valuable.

Who am I ?

You have come from the line of limited additions. Where there is only one. One God, one you, one me… and everyone else? Still one of each. There is more to who you are than what you eat, drink, wear, & drive.

Abraham found out his identity from God. “5Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.
6 And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee”.
Genesis 17:5-6 (KJV) So did Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, David, Jeremiah, Paul, The 12 Disciples etc… If all of these men found their identity from God then why are we trying to go to other sources?

What is the greatest misconception about you? Can you effectively communicate who you are to others? Are people walking away from you classing you as something you are not?
What do you do when someone has put the wrong label on you? You can’t just accept it cause it will have an effect on your destination.

Let’s say your traveling to Orlando to meet up with friends on vacation today. Only thing is you have a connecting flight through Texas. You arrive at the check-in counter for your flight. You hand over your bag that has an ID tag to be checked and labeled. Some very important valuable items are inside. You receive your gate pass and proceed to your flight gate.

You are now in Orlando and standing at the baggage claim station. Moments pass by and everyone else has received their luggage. You stand there waiting but that’s it, there are no more bags. This must be a mistake because you had your bag checked in. You end up making a report to baggage claims office.

Thirty minutes later you found out your bag was found in Texas which is good news to you. It will be much better if it was in your possession though. So you decide to do something to occupy your time until your bag arrives.

My friend, it only goes to show you that if you don’t have the right label on you then you can’t end up at the right destination. You must know your identity and only accept labels that are from God.

You were made in the image of God, you are the head and not the tail, you are above and not beneath. Your identity is precious to God so please make sure it is precious to you. If there is a problem don’t forget you can always ask God ‘Who Am I?’.
